With the temperature in Perth going over 41C, it was a last minute decision to head towards the city to watch the Australia day fireworks display.

Rather than attempting to join the chaos that occurs around all the river vantage points we decided to watch them from a park in Highgate and, despite the hot gusty winds, it was a really pleasant evening. We even managed to avoid the usual traffic problems getting home.

I fired off about 150 shots with half a dozen of the best images now available in the image gallery but here is a series shot to whet your appetite.

On Wednesday night we went to our favourite Indonesian restaurant, Sparrow in Northbridge where the food is always good and extremely reasonable in price.

I went through our order with the young waitress. Two steamed rice, a couple of chicken dishes and some vegetables. Of course, I was ordering using the Indonesian names that appeared on the menu.

It wasn't until I ordered the two glasses of hot tea that I discovered that our waitress doesn't speak Indonesian. "Dua teh panas" apparently threw her! 

It turned out that she only had one rice written down because, while she picked up on nasi putih, she failed (again) on "dua".

It's the first time we have been to an Indo restaurant where the staff has not been fluent.

Interestingly there was the usual "help wanted" sign in the window ( a sign of our excellent economy) for wait staff.. Must be fluent in English and Indonesian!

As you may know, we have a new car.. The updated model from our previous one. It has taken me a while to get the photos online as we had to wait three weeks (a sore point) to take delivery and then two days after we got it my Nan died and I didn’t want to post anything before I had written something about that.

Christmas also delayed things.
