And one other thing

Just one other thing seemed to fail in the server migration. The .htaccess is not working correctly so the members area is currently out of action. I will manually re-install the passwords.. Possibly tonight!

Photoquest 20

I left it late last month.. Flip was late this month.. Not my fault, really!!

Alarm clock .
Is just not very attractive, or photogenic .. so, let’s do a low light shot shall we!
Daily newspaper .
Two different ones, both from the eastern states. One is the “Financial Review” and the other is the national broadsheet “The Australian”
I took this photo at my favourite coffee shop. The local daily “The West Australian” was unavailable because all copies were being read by other patrons.
The wiring situation …
…under your computer desk.. Is scary!
Your mobile phone (part 1).
This is my Samsung phone. I have had it for 19 months now and it’s still going strong.. I really like this phone
Your mobile phone (part 2).
In fact, I like it enough to give you a second look .
Something you can’t or won’t eat.
I thought this would be tough, as really I will eat anything. But then a couple of hours later I realised exactly what I don’t eat.. not because of the quality of food, but for political reasons.

Off with his head..er

It took just over 24 hours for the DNS to update, but here I am again and with just about a perfect migration.

I expected there to be some minor hiccups with the transfer of the site because of how it was hosted on my ISP web space in the past so to explain, here’s a very quick lesson in web coding for the layperson.

When an image or a link is called on a website, the easiest way to do it is to call it from the site root by using a / for example “/images/my_image.jpg” or “/index.php“. If you move the site to a new URL it doesn’t matter because the browser already knows the website URL so without making any change to the code http://www.site1/index.php will easily become http://www.site2/index.php

That’s fairly clear, right?

By hosting on my ISP web space, the web root was the ISP website, so if I was to call an image I had to call it from /~seja/ , which meant that I had to modify just about every page to allow the images to work after migration.

The other think I had to do was change the server paths to allow some of the nifty php goodness that I have written to still work, and all this without being able to test properly until after the DNS had taken effect.

At first glance it looks like I have successfully managed to move everything correctly with exception of the header image. Not a bad effort at all!

Coding II

Comments by Flip on my Coding post

CSS is fantastic, really, the only thing that bothers me is that IE and Firefox don’t always interpret them the same way, especially things which have to do with relativity (and no, I can’t mention one single thing now, should you ask) :)

It’s ok.. I don’t need to ask, I completely know what you are talking about. For the record, I find that Firefox renders CSS correctly and most of the problems I have are with IE, but there are many things that will work correctly in all browsers.

I have used CSS for over 4 years now (a little at first but increasing) and keep learning new tricks all the time.. It’s often a trial and error approach as is anything computer related. There are also many good websites around that have tried and true methods of doing things, but I still learn most effectively by practical approach.

All packed and ready to move

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

I decided that I would move the whole site when I migrated it to the new server. I also decided that, seeing as the URI chain would not be the same, I would go and do some major cleaning up of earlier posts so.. Anything written in “individual post” form has now been converted to php, as have all the photo meme pages. The older stuff that was combined (ie the stuff before June 2003) has all been put into a folder at /archive/oldsite.

I had to go through all the configuration settings because the server path is also different. I am hoping that I won’t have too many errors, however I will have to find out when the files are on the new server.

I am currently ftp’ing, but the amount of image files that I have mean that it’s going to take quite a while.

So, having said that.. this may well be the final post I write on old ISP web space.

One last thing, I will change the DNS records for the domain on Monday, so if you access this site via the domain name, and a lot of people do.. there may be a period where it is offline, but … I’ll be back!

UPDATE 2010 : Now doing the same thing, but archiving these posts into WordPress

Coding

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

One of the new websites that I have been working on needs to be positioned in the centre of the visual area of the browser, this was a requirement of the client and something that is very easy to do using HTML version 3 by setting the height attributes in a table.

Height was removed in HTML 4 and these days I am beyond that anyway, tending to aim for XHTML compliance. (For example, this site should validate as XHTML, although because the php include files are written for server paths and not local machine paths Dreamweaver doesn’t realise it’s supposed to be following that version, usually leaving me with troubles in images and <br> tags.)

Two choices were available to me. The first and easiest was to use HTML 4 and get it working, but I chose to find out how to get around the missing height attribute.

Because the function of CSS is to produce the visual layout elements of a web page it was there that I found the answer. Height is still available so I set a class called outerShell and then called that in the table. A second table makes the actual content of the site.

.outerShell {
 height : 100%;
 width : 100%;
 }
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td align="center">Centred content here (in this case a second table) </td>
</tr>
</table>

It is highly likely that there is a better workaround for this, but it did work on Firefox and IE and it also validated, so the objectives were met

Logopolis

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

This is the week in Doctor Who that I have been waiting for with much trepidation.

In tonight’s final episode of Logopolis, Tom Baker’s Doctor will fall from a radio telescope after a battle with his adversary, the Master. The fall is too much for the Doctors body and he regenerates into a new Doctor, played by Peter Davison.

Saturday’s season finale of the new series of Doctor Who will see Christopher Eccleston fighting his long time enemy the Dalek’s.

How will it end? What will happen?

(*cough* regeneration *cough*)

Photoquest 19

Talk about leaving it to the last minute, here we go with the July Photoquest!

A Bank (part 1) .
So, these days banks have been determined to drive up their profits by closing branches and getting rid of their staff, so I present to you modern banking (I nearly included a photo of the “Internet banking” link from my bank)

A Bank (part 2).
Joe might be interested to know that our state bank, Bankwest (The Bank of Western Australia) is owned by The Bank of Scotland. This 50 level tower is their corporate home.

An instrument.
If making music is the second option, then this is my preferred method. Forgive me if you have only just eaten!

A Library.
I cheated with this one and used an old image. One that I had taken when I was trying to use a library theme for the Thursday Challenge “Thirst”. This is the state library, which is spread out over five levels.

Calendar.
A Buddhist calendar for the month of July.

A Store Dummy
The store dummies at “Live” in the Galleria shopping centre.
