26 Things

The 26 things is essentially an open photography scavenger hunt. To do this meme I decided to concentrate on the Central Business District of Perth. Here is the result –

« Frame
Canopy framework of the Central Park Tower forecourt.

« Glass
The glass stock exchange tower.

« Arrow
You may turn left.

« Numbers
Bus Stop on St Georges Terrace.

« Small
A weed growing outside a vacant property on Adelaide Terrace.

« Open
The door to the right is kept open always allowing pedestrian traffic to cut through to the next street.

« Fruit
A store that makes fruit juices.

« Wheel
A Motorcycle parked on Hay Street.

« Plastic
The handle on this public telephone has a really old fashioned plastic look to it.

« Cover
A telecommunications manhole on St Georges Terrace

« Natural
The Swan River foreshore.

« Saturday
The Lotto Life

« Multi-Coloured
An ATM on the Hay Street Mall.

« Home
For Sale – Inner city living!

« Shadow
Lights and banners on Hay Street Mall make interesting shadows.

« Sticky
A discarded Chupa-Chup near a bin on Hay Street

« Clean

« Foot
Shoes at an upmarket menswear boutique

« Sport
Some skaters practising on some steps just off St Georges Terrace.

« Round
Gumballs!

« Group
This group resting in the gardens of Central Park would have to be tourists. It isn’t warm enough for locals to be sunning themselves just yet.

« Man Made
This tropical garden in Central Park has no resemblance whatsoever to the native flora of the area

« Half
My half eaten Almondine… Hey, taking photographs is hungry work!

« Path
The footpath on St Georges Terrace

« Full
A practically overflowing rubbish bin.

« End
Nuff said!

Swan Bells

Today I took the kids down to the Swan Bells Tower in the city. Of course, I took my camera.

The Swan Bells Tower- looking north.
The tower was built as the City of Perth Millennium project and houses eighteen bells. Twelve of these bells are the historic “St Martin in the Fields” bells, dating back from before the 14th century, a gift to the people of Perth to commemorate Australia’s bicentenary in 1988.
“I owe you five farthings, say the bells of St Martins”
While a lot of people in Perth are resentful of the amount of money spent on what many consider a frivolous project. I actually think it was a great idea. Perth, in so many ways is a practical city so it is nice to have a landmark that is aesthetical and not some corporate tower.
Quite a few different ideas were put forward for the design of the tower. Thankfully the Government of the day decided to stay away from fake heritage and construct a modern building. The glass spire towers over the building while the bronze sails are certainly eye catching
A while ago I took a photo “outside my office window” which had Wyn asking what that building was. I felt it was only fitting to take a photo from the tower looking back up the street where the original photo was taken

Architecture Photos

Seeing as I put the challenge out there I feel I should respond quickly to it. So as a result, here are some of my Architecturally pleasing Photographs

A night shot of the Broad Construction / Hatch building on Stirling Street Perth

Generally the average passer by would probably not notice how the lower floors of the Stock Exchange building has been lined up to match the older “Lawson” building it sits next to. It even emulates the external shape of the older building.
f
This art deco building is on the corner of Hay Street and William Street. It is dwarfed by the 50 level concrete and glass “Bankwest Tower” that it sits near

Modern Industrial buildings are created using a prefabrication technique, and it’s really quite clever. They pour concrete on-site to form all the walls, then they use a crane to pull them up of the ground, gluing them together. It’s the ultimate Lego! Pre-fab is only limited by budget and imagination, and unfortunately budget often wins out .
Pre-fab ends up looking pretty-drab in many cases, but as always there are exceptions

This is also a pre-fab building. It’s definitely above the average dullsville designs, but what makes this one really stand out is the colour used to accentuate the verandah and window ledges. As soon as I saw this building I knew how I wanted to display it.

Architecture Challenge

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

Wyn was saying the he finds modern architecture appealing wondered if that makes him strange.

The answer to that, naturally, is no. I don’t think there is anything wrong with appreciating modern architecture. I live in a city that is only 175 years old, strikingly modern and very beautiful, and I have to say that I really do enjoy some of the modern buildings in this city.

Of course, architecture like all art is subjective. You may recall Wyn’s challenge earlier this year on ugly architecture and I am quite sure that there will be people that disagree with me on what I defined as “ugly”. Also, one of the downsides of posting ugly photographs is it’s so negative.

So how about posting to your webspace a series of architectural photographs that you like. Call it a sequel, if you will! Oh and don’t forget to let me know the link in the comments section so I can link back.
