Literal Photo Challenges

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

I used to have a look at all the Photo Friday entries, but it is just getting too hard. When I started submitting photographs there were maybe 200 entries a week and now it is getting closer to 600, and I just don’t have that much time on my hands to look at them. I also like to try not to take the theme to literal. This week’s landscape theme has a lot of landscape photographs, last week was a lot of black and white photographs, and so on.

Not that being literal is a bad thing, there are many examples of my own submissions that follow the theme to the letter, I’m happy to say that this weeks is just not one of them.

Today is another public holiday, which is nice in a “get to sleep in” kind of way, but not so good for the finances. I’m still hurting from the Easter and Anzac day weekends and could really do with being at work and earning the moula. Still, this is the last one now until October, by which time I will be crying out for it.

Photo Friday – (changing the) Landscape

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

About 10 years ago the craze to put Cocos palms in was in full swing. Unfortunately, once they start to mature it becomes quite a costly exercise maintaining them. Eventally you need to get a cherry picker in to prune them, or leave the dead branches hanging underneath.

As part of the changing landscape that is my back garden, this tree had to go.

Here we go with another of Flip’s challenges.

A post box

Courtesy of moi.. The official kind you put letters in when you send them to others.

Nearest roundabout

I live in a roundabout rich suburb, so I am spoiled for choice. This isn’t the closest one to me, but it was right next to the pillar box in the photo above.

A firestation

The fire Station that used to be just down the road moved into a spanking new building in Malaga, which is handy because that is where I work.

Your keyboard.

..keyboards might reflect our language differences. A couple of macro shots I did of mine reflected on my need to clean the damn thing more often.

Your wallet

and if possible some coins in your currency... Coins are about all I can scrape up at the moment.

Unless you want to look at the moths in my wallet!

Theme Thursday – Indispensable

What is Indispensable? Apart from the obvious things we all need to survive, picking something that you can’t live without is actually really quite difficult, but the one thing that I would hate to be without, is music.

Swedish mile long assignment

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

It is said that you should learn a new thing every day, and today I learned that a Swedish mile is not a mile at all, but around 6 miles. As if imperial measurements aren’t confusing enough!

Meanwhile, at around the same time that I am freezing my butt off through one of the coldest Perth nights ever, I am having to deal with two people from Norway telling me that it’s not really cold. Funny, I’m sure I remember blogging about relative temperatures around this time last year. (From the BOM website – The overnight minimum was 1.2 at 0630 hours)

My assignment that I have been working so hard on is finished and online. It’s interesting for me to see the learning curve in it as some of the earlier scenes are not as good as the later ones. The scenes I started with were the colour scenes and I’m not so happy with them, however the work I did after that was pretty damn good.

I spent about 40 hours just coding the animation, and I think it shows. If you are interested in looking at it, I have put it up on my work site http://www.seja-design.com.au/instructional_design.html and I would love to hear some feedback on what you think.

Extra Space Blues

Why is it that my site fucks up when I am doing something critical.

Flip had requested access to the members area of this site, so I dutifully went and modified the .htpasswd file to her to log in. It’s technical, but not complicated and shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes to do. Basically, I have to encrypt the password, add it to the ascii file that has all the passwords and upload it to the server (there’s some chmod issues too, but I don’t want to bore you).

Easy? No no no no no!

Once again, I got data quota exceeded messages, despite the fact that I still have 8mb of disk space left. Great, it’s Friday evening.

The solution was simple, though a pain in the arse. I took down a whole heap of images to get my quota back under 20mb and then uploaded the password file. I took this opportunity to upload my Theme Thursday entry for this week while I was at it, followed by reloading all the images back onto the server.. With no problems.

I’m wondering if the data is manually checked, and some techie at arachnet thought I had gone over. Could removing the images and reloading them clear the block? I don’t know.

What I do know is that the server is an apache server, which derives its name from “a patchy server”. It’s basically a whole pile of modules working together so it is incredibly adaptable to any number of server variations.

Meh.. I think I’m dribbling.. Ok, you can wake up now!

Photo Friday – Macro

Do you know what this is?

I’ll let you know before next week’s challenge :P

This is indeed a Logitech trackball mouse. Everyone give yourselves a pat on the back. An extra well done to Ethan who not only said it was a trackball or a mouse.. But actually went on to tell me exactly what one it was :)

Thanks for playing
