I haven’t been blogging for the past few days as I have been doing some backend work on this site. While the look of the site generally hasn’t changed any, the aim is to make updating a little less tedious.
Mind you, it probably wouldn’t be the same site witho ut teh same blatent mistakes and <coding errors, so they will continue.

That is all!

Photo Friday – Aged

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

My Photo friday is up and this weeks topic is aged, and I certainly had no end of possibilities for it. Thoughts included aged landscapes, aged wine and aged cars (its been a motoring kind of weekend).
In the end I went to my parents house. Always good horders, they have some very cool old stuff. Having a look around their house I spotted this..

Rally Oz

Rally Australia ended with Norwegian Petter Solburg winning for the Subaru World Rally Team. Solburg dedicated his win to local Subaru legend Possum Bourne who died earlier this year.
With Ed Ordinski out due to a slight case of rolling his car, Perth driver Dean Herridge took out the Group N in his Subaru.

I didn’t blog this last night because they had the officials windup party in the evening, which roughly equates to free food and free alcohol.

Rally Saturday

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

With most of the teething problems dealt with, Friday went a lot smoother for me. I spent Friday night as the Post Chief of the Parc Ferme in control.
What that basically means is, I sign the drivers in when they go through a time control, in this case the last one for evening. Parc Ferme, is the security lockdown area. The cars are taken into this compound and the crew are escorted away from their vehicles. Parc Ferme is one of the more restricted areas during an event.

I was planning on blogging last night when I got home making two entries for that day, but I may have been distracted talking to Cheri on IRC instead

I don’t know what it is like in other parts of the world, but here in Perth we have this rather strange fixation on having Fireworks at major events.
They shoot these projectiles at the sky and form pretty lights beautifully choreographed to some soundtrack or another

Apparently!

Lately my thinking has been that they fire up some of those big chrysanthemum crackers, have a run of lower level ones, then some more chrysanthemum then some glittery sparkley ones, then a mix of both, culminating in a massive explosion of light and gunpowder (or what ever the hell it is they use in those things these days)… and they really don’t choreograph a thing, just let peoples brains put the explosions in time to whatever piece of music they are playing

One day I should test this theory by taping a fireworks show, and re-dubbing it, but I digress…

So they have fireworks at every major event. Its a round of the world rally championship… well theres three nights of skyward pyrotechnics. Oh, Royal Agricultural Show next month… Thats good for EIGHT nights, then we will have New Years Eve, and Australia day, and what ever else.
I’m starting to find it a bit ordinary.

I spent most of Saturday down at the Jarrahdale service park. 12 hours, in fact.

My duty for today was Post Chief of the Service Out time control, no different to last nights job. I did get to finish earlier though and took that opportunity to race back upto Perth to see some racing.

As most of what I do is behind scenes stuff, I really don’t get to see much action, so when I realised that I didn’t have to work in the evening, I took the chance to head back to Gloucester Park which I did in only 45 minutes. Thats another bonus with the single service park, no insanely long trips to places like York, Bunbury or Collie as Jarrahdale is just outside the urban sprawl.

I went to the general viewing area but it was too crowded, so using a little bit of local knowledge (and my access pass) I went to a really good location close to the track.
I’d almost forgotten what an adrenalin rush it all is

Highlights – Watching the big guns like McRae, Solberg, Sainz and Mäkinen and Burns.
Lowlights – One of my favorite drivers, Ed Ordinski hit a rut on the Super Special Stage at Gloucester and rolled his car. Both he and co-driver Iain Stewart are Ok, I saw them later on with the CRO[?] and they were both fine. It is a real pity though as they are both well liked and respected crew, always pleasant, always cheerful.
Up until that point they were winning the Group N catagory.

I elected NOT to stay for the fireworks.

Rally Australia

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

Rally Australia has moved its city racing location from Langley Park to Gloucester Park. There were a couple of reasons behind this, the biggest on being that this years Australian leg of the World Rally Championship was moved from November to September would have turned the venue into a quagmire… Apparently!
Funnily enough, I remember back when the event used to be held in September, and I know we did Langley then.

Another reason for the change of location could have come about because of the new “Single Service Park”.

The word from the hierarchy is, this is a cost saving for the competitors as they do not have to build new service centres every day.

Previously they have had a main service park at Langley, daily ones en-route Friday and Saturday, with the Super Special Stages held at the Sotico camp having its own large park.

Being forced to comply with the single service park ruling meant that rally organisers could no longer have the big service centre 3Km from the heart of Perth City. A central location was chosen in Jarrahdale.

Having a new venue in the city is not without its share of problems. Oh sure there are some fantastic things about it. From the punters point of view, the new course is spectacular. The views from the grandstands are even better than in previous years.

For us working on the event, having the officials carpark literally next to where we are working is a great joy. Previously we had to park on Ozone reserve and pretty much walk the full length of Langley to get to our duty. This meant carrying things like eskies were pretty much out of the question.

Unfortunately, some of the setups were not thought out very well. While nothing was really major, ie the teams and spectators were unaware, there were a few headaches for us behind the scenes.
Its a learning process I guess.

Jobs performed last night – Vehicle marshalling (Shakedown area), coordinating security in Parc ferme. Jobs not performed but dreamed about – Cutting the wire to the insanely Low Fidelity PA speaker in our area which was nothing but loud and annoying!

Bag Snatch

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

There are some low bastards on this planet!
I was stopped at a service station where I get my petrol[?] from today. Its convenient, not because its close to home, but its somewhere I have to stop at on my postal run.
I’m not going to name the suburb that it is in, but lets just say that it is more of a lower socio-economic area, although its proximity to the city means that it is slowly changing.

While I was taking the mail in, I heard a cry from the forecourt and watched a car speed off almost running someone down.
The woman who almost got cleaned up was getting hysterical and my first immediate thought was that her car had been stolen.
It is not uncommon for people to leave the keys in the car while fueling up, and even while paying, because despite all the crime wave doom and gloom in the tabloid media, people still have a certain feeling of trust for other people/

As it turned out, the people in the (stolen) car, speeding off, had snatched the womans bag. It was partly her fault because she had put it on the boot[?] next to her as she was filling up, but I couldn’t help feeling sorry for her.
No one needs that shit

A few people tried going after the vehicle, myself included, but really there was no hope in catching it.
By the time people realised what had happened, they were long gone.

Something else that also bugged me. When the Police arrived they were asking for descriptions, and naturally they asked what colour the offenders were.
Nothing wrong with that of course. Skin colour is a distinguishing feature as much as height, build and hair colour.
No. What bugged me what the acting sergeant’s surprised tone when told the offenders were white. Ahh racism is alive and well!

Extra Sleep

This page is archived from a static page – some links may not work

It has been noted here on a few occasions that I have been rather busy of late!
Adding fuel to the fire is the impending Rally Australia which is going to take up all my time from tomorrow evening.
I plan to blog some time over the weekend with bits of info and inside goss… Stay tuned for that, its SURE to be enthralling!!!

I’ve got ontop of the updates for Gwanju and plan to upload them by tomorrow.
I’ve also got Leather Emporium and Stylex to go, but thankfully they are not major ones.

Proof that I have been burning the candle at both ends again.
Yesterday afternoon I came home from TAFE and sat in front of the computer to get some work done. By around 6pm I was stuffed, so I decided that a nap would be advisable.
It’s not uncommon for me to have a couple of hours sleep if I’m tired during the day, so I figured I would do that, get up, have some dinner and then crunch bytes for the remainder of the evening.

When I woke up at 11.30pm I realised that this just wasn’t going to happen, so I went back to sleep

Everyone reckoned I was looking really refreshed and full of beans this morning… Wonder why?
